CPL Report US$40 Million Boost for Barbados Economy
The Caribbean Premier League (CPL) greatly impacted Barbados in 2023. It brought in a total of $40,446,754 to the economy of Barbados during the tournament.
For the first time since 2019, Barbados hosted CPL matches. This time, they also hosted Women’s CPL matches for the first time. The matches took place at the Kensington Oval between August 30 and September 3.
Six men’s matches and three women’s matches were played during these dates. The Barbados Royals, led by Rovman Powell and coached by Trevor Penny, participated but didn’t make it to the playoffs.
A research organization called YouGov Sport calculated the total impact of the event. They looked at how much money organizers and visitors spent on the island, the media coverage, and how much commercial value was generated from broadcasting the matches worldwide.
The study found that during the CPL matches, 10,951 hotel rooms were filled in Barbados. This included players, coaches, administrators, TV crews, and other people involved in the event. Visitors who came for the tournament also spent money on the island.
The CPL matches were broadcast to a huge audience of 853.5 million viewers worldwide in 2023. The CPL worked with Barbados Tourism Marketing Inc (BTMI) to show off Barbados as a fantastic holiday destination. They created special content shown during the matches to promote Barbados.
Pete Russell, the CEO of CPL, said it was great to be back in Barbados after four years. He was happy with the atmosphere at Kensington Oval and looks forward to making an even bigger impact in 2024.
Graham Clarke, Director of Caribbean for Barbados Tourism Marketing Inc, was also pleased to see matches again at Kensington Oval. He emphasized how cricket isn’t just a game but also an important part of Barbados’ economy. Every dollar visitors spend during CPL week has a positive effect on Barbados and its people.
The country’s three main economic drivers areĀ tourism, the international business sector, and foreign direct investment.
